bedroom community
More than a record label, Bedroom Community is a movement born from the studio.
Founded in Reykjavík in 2006 by Icelandic composer and producer Valgeir Sigurðsson, together with American composer Nico Muhly and Australian-Icelandic producer Ben Frost, it gathered a constellation of like-minded artists determined to reimagine how music could be created, recorded, and shared with the world. From its home at Greenhouse Studios, Bedroom Community became a vessel for new ideas.
Before founding his own creative community, Valgeir spent eight years as the studio right-hand to Iceland’s art-pop icon Björk. These experiences shaped his approach and led directly to Bedroom Community — the natural evolution of that exploratory spirit and experimental process. From the outset, Valgeir sought to dissolve the borders between classical and electronic, tradition and technology, the concert hall and the bedroom. He treats the studio itself as a creative instrument: a place where the traditions of classical composition are pulled into the present, fused with experimental electronics, and illuminated through the lens of pop production.
The label has nurtured and amplified seminal works by Daníel Bjarnason, Sam Amidon, Lyra Pramuk, Nadia Sirota, Manchester Collective, aYia, Emily Hall, Liam Byrne, 404.zero, James McVinnie, Sam Slater, Gabriella Smith, Isabelle Lewis and Daniel Pioro among others. Each release is not just a record but part of a living archive — a testament to the belief that music, at its most vital, knows no borders.
The collective spirit of Bedroom Community is its most precious resource. Its roster is made up of creatively diverse individuals drawn to the liminal spaces between genres, working at the forefront of contemporary music for orchestra, film, TV, theatre, dance, opera, games, and art installations.
Bedroom Community’s rare and eclectic live events have become a thing of legend since the original Whale Watching Tour launched in 2010. Its artists have come together for specially curated, sold-out performances at The Barbican and Southbank Centre in London, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Philharmonie de Paris, and across major festivals, venues, and clubs throughout Europe and the US. Together, these projects have established Bedroom Community as not only a label, but a leading voice and uncompromising tastemaker in modern music.
NewForm is currently planning the label’s 20th Anniversary celebrations.
